What Is DFM?

Design for Manufacturability โ€” Before It's Too Late

"The most expensive design changes happen after tooling. A DFM audit happens before."

A DFM (Design for Manufacturability) audit is a systematic review of your hardware design to identify issues that will cause problems โ€” or cost you money โ€” on the factory floor. We analyze your PCB layout, component selection, BOM, mechanical fit, and manufacturing process before you ever place a production order.

Most hardware failures are predictable. Most rework costs are avoidable. Our DFM audit finds the problems while they're still cheap to fix.

PCB Layout & Stackup Review

Layer count, trace routing, ground planes, impedance control, and via placement โ€” reviewed against your manufacturer's capabilities.

Component Selection & Sourcing Risk

End-of-life flags, single-source dependencies, long lead time components, and BOM alternatives that maintain performance at lower cost.

Assembly & Soldering Process

SMT and through-hole process review, paste mask analysis, component orientation, and reflow profile compatibility.

Thermal & Mechanical Analysis

Thermal dissipation paths, mechanical clearances, enclosure fit, and vibration/shock compliance for your target environment.

Written Report with Prioritized Fixes

Every audit delivers a full written report with findings ranked by severity โ€” critical, major, and minor โ€” with actionable recommendations for each.

Common Questions

DFM Audit FAQ

Everything you need to know before submitting your design.

We accept Altium Designer (.PrjPcb), KiCad, Eagle, OrCAD, Zuken, and standard Gerber RS-274X files. For schematics we accept native files or PDF exports. BOM in Excel or CSV. If you're using another EDA tool, just ask โ€” we've seen most of them.
No. We can provide a preliminary quote based on the quiz above and basic information about your board (layer count, approximate component count, complexity). We sign an NDA before you share any design files.
A fab's DRC (Design Rule Check) only verifies that your files meet their minimum manufacturing rules โ€” it won't catch signal integrity issues, BOM risks, thermal problems, or assembly process failures. Our audit is a full engineering review by a senior EE, not an automated file check.
Absolutely โ€” and this is one of the highest-ROI situations. If you're seeing defects, yield issues, or field failures from a previous production run, our audit will identify root causes and prescribe specific design changes before your next order.
Yes. Many clients engage us to implement the recommendations directly โ€” redesigning specific sections of the PCB, re-specifying components, or managing the updated production files. We offer fixed-scope remediation engagements at a separate rate.
We offer expedited audit options for urgent situations. Depending on board complexity, we can deliver in as little as 5 business days for a rush surcharge. Note this in your quiz submission and we'll confirm availability when we reach out.
